Abelito's Delicatessen, Cafe Bar Mural

This mural was painted onto the chimney breast of an old building in the centre of Abergavenny in Monmouthshire, South Wales. The mural forms part of the interior design of Abelito's Delicatessen, Cafe and Bar.

Abelito's has a Spanish theme, and the mural is based on scenes in and around Gumiel de Mercado in Northern Spain, where the family of one of the proprietors comes from.

Key buildings from the area, and the grandparents of one of the proprietors, are shown in a landscape based on the grape-growing countryside around the town.

The mural was painted towards the end of a two week refurbishment of the building, and had to be completed to a very tight timescale prior to the re-opening of the premises.

This is the complete mural, with the old stone fireplace shown. The mural had to fit around the fireplace and the wooden beam which intrudes at the top of the mural.

This picture cuts off the sunflowers at the bottom of the mural in order to show the rest of the mural more clearly.

These two pictures shows the man on the left of the mural and the woman on the right of the mural. They depicts as accurately as possible (based on poor photographs) the grandparents of one of the proprietors.

This picture shows the two figures in the centre of the mural, picking grapes

This is a close-up of one of the churches in Gumiel de Mercado; this church appears in the distance, just to the right of the centre of the mural
